Anyone who has lived with an elderly dog knows the heartbreaking feelings of watching a once energetic and nimble pet begin to stumble, avoid stairs, and become reluctant to jump. These are symptoms commonly associated with osteoarthritis, the most common cause of pain in dogs. Osteoarthritis can be caused by aging, hip and elbow dysplasia, partial tears of ligaments and tendons, immune disorders, and a variety of other congenital and genetic diseases. Typically, your veterinarian will diagnose the specific problem with x-rays or arthroscopy, and may treat your dog with supplements and anti-inflammatory medicines. The problem is that some dogs are so severely affected that they need something more. They also may be unable to tolerate the drug therapy. For them, stem cell therapy offers hope and a chance to feel well once again.
Our doctors are able to perform most veterinary surgeries that would be required.such as spays, neuters, mass removals, dentistry and much more! If there is a surgery that your pet needs that our doctors feel a specialist should perform, they will get that information for you and try to arrange the procedure to be done through referral.
Pre-operative Procedures vary from patient to patient and really depend on the type of surgery that your pet has to have. Preliminary blood work to check kidney and liver function is usually done the day of surgery to be sure that your pet will tolerate anesthesia well. No food and water can be given after 10:00 p.m. the day prior to surgery and drop-off is always between 8:00-9:00 a.m. Call the office for your surgical consult today!
Our hospital is equipped to do many laboratory tests. In fact, the hospital recently upgraded the lab with equipment that can give us your pet's complete blood profile in just minutes. We can analyze tissue samples, blood, urine, stool, skin scrapings, etc.
We also use several outside laboratories for more comprehensive and specialized tests. Depending on the type of test that is needed, we can have results for you the same day that you visit or if the lab tests are very complicated, we will get the results to you as soon as they become available to us. We will always make calls to your home to update you on any lab test that has come in for your pet.
Blood and tissue analysis is very important. When a doctor encourages you to have these samples tested from your pet, consider it carefully before declining. The doctors try to give you all the information that they can on your pet's condition. Blood and tissue analysis is required to give you that specific look into your pet’s health that we wouldn’t be able to get by just a physical exam.
Our doctors recommend yearly checkups for all pets without any problems. When you take your dog or cat in each year for his veterinary exam, the vet doesn't just give him some vaccinations and send him on his way. He does a thorough exam: checking the body to make sure all the internal organs feel normal and there are no worrisome lumps or bumps; checking the condition of the eyes and ears; listening to the heart and lungs; checking their weight; and taking their temperature. Because dogs and cats age differently than people, this annual physical is comparable to you having a physical exam every five or six years. This is especially important if your pet is middle-aged or older because it gives the veterinarian a chance to find and treat health problems before they become serious.
